Bows Arch
What is it called when you use a violin bow on an electric guitar?
Is there a name for this technique?
And just out of curiosity, do they make something to put on a fret to arch the strings of the guitar so you can hit individual strings like on a violin?
That trick (which as far as I know is just called "using a violin bow on a guitar") was popularized by Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. During the movie "The Song Remains The Same", he can be seen using the bow during the middle section of "Dazed and Confused". He actually only bows the high E, B, and low E most of the time, and then uses the bow as a percussive device against the strings.
I saw him do this live in '77. When you see him hit the strings and then point with the bow, the soundman has a single delay come of out the side he points to. Really cheesey now, but very cool then.
In the early 80's, I seem to remember an ad in the back of Guitar Player magazine for a guitar specially made to use a bow on . The bridge was arched (like a violin), and the body had cut outs above and below the strings to accomodate the bow. But being a very expensive one-trick pony (seems that it was several thousand dollars), I'm sure it disappeared into oblivion, along side the Ovation Breadwinner (the ugliest electric guitar ever made).
