Beach-combing on the Thames?
I've always been keen to have a look at the Thames 'beaches' and found stairs down to a spot yesterday. Spotted the expected bits of ceramics, lots of rubbish, very old bits of shoes etc. Then i spotted a piece of jaw bone complete with 6 or 7 teeth. I think it may well have been human, possibly a very old piece of a child's remains. Firstly, is this likely? I'm sure the thames must be full of skeletons but are human remains frequently visible of the shores? Secondly, if i go again, are there any health and safety precautions i should take? Sensible shoes and a good scrub down when i get home but would gloves and wellies be necesarry? How serious are the nasties in the water and how easy would they be to catch? Thank you
I recommend a Tetanus jab and one for Weils disease. But you should be fine with wellies, stout rubber gloves and a good scrub.
The Thames was for a large period of it's life an open sewer and all manner of rubbish dumped there, it was even used for ritual deposits. (The iron age Battersea shield was found in the thames). Animal remains were dumped in the Thames (including animals from the Zoo in the tower.)
If you think you've found human remains, it may be worth notifying the police, call them immediately if you see any.
Unless you've training, don't chance that human remains may be ancient, they may be recent.
Any remains that may be murder victims are still potential evidence for 75 years after the event.
If you remember not long ago, "Adam" was a childs dismembered body (minus head, arms, legs) was recovered from the Thames. He'd been allegedly murdered for body parts for "Muti" rituals, the case is still "Unsolved" and his real identity unknown.
