Can I use my plain old umbrella for sun protection?
I've been totting around an umbrella for a while now and it just hit me - there's a lot of light eeking from under the fabric. I don't have special vision so I have no way of telling if theres any UVA or UVB coming through.
I've looked online for a propper parasol but those things are frightingly expensive! ($50 for something that might be blown away with a good breeze or snagged by an inconsiderate family member and ruined on a stormy day).
Do I even need a parasol or can I just use an umbrella from the dollar store? Also, does the color of the fabric make a difference?
Most likely, yes... polyester and nylon do a better job than cotton; closely woven fabrics do better than loosely woven ones, and dark colors do better than light colors.
