Film Review: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Having worked his way as screenwriter to such action films as LETHAL WEAPON, THE LAST BOY SCOTT, LAST ACTION HERO, and THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT, to name a few, Shane Black steps behind the camera for KISS KISS BANG BANG for his debut film. Having also written the screenplay for the film all the required ingredients for a “Shane Black movie” are present especially the biting humor.
One of the great aspects of this film is the fact that Black plays up all the
stereotypical “Hollywood-isms” and pokes fun at them while also keeping us on the edge of our seats in this mystery action flick.
Robert Downey, Jr. plays Harry Lockhart a very bad thief who gets unwillingly, at first, wrapped up in a casting call for a new film and who subsequently gets the part (or so it seems). He then must take lessons from Gay Perry (Val Kilmer, in his most under rated comic role), an openly gay private investigator who must show Harry the tricks of the trade. It’s not soon after that Harry finds himself wrapped up in a murder mystery and a beautiful woman by the name of Harmony Faith Lane (Michelle Monaghan), a former acquaintance that he falls held over heels for and whom he can’t say “no” to.
Downey, Jr. and Kilmer are hands down the perfect team-up since LETHAL WEAPON’S Glover and Gibson and this film only shows that Black is no one trick pony when it comes to the buddy-cop formula.
