Clothes Rail
Whenever I enter a shop, even when the budget allows for only small extravagances, I am immediately drawn to the clothes rails to see just what exactly is hidden there. More exciting to browse than any window display, these clothes rails hold items not worn by every other person on the street, and the chance of a really amazing find.
A few years ago, when looking for exactly the right wedding dress, my worm out sister and I had almost called it a day, when we decided to make just one more stop. There in the back of a rather stuffy department store’s clothes rail, she found a treasure. An Edwardian wedding dress by Laura Ashley made as a sample, in exactly her tiny size and perfect in all regards.
Sales time is not my favorite time to check out the clothes rails. It may be cause for celebration amongst other shoppers, but for me, it is as though my private hunting grounds have been opened to tourists. There is always the fear the cute peacoat I have been saving for and carefully positioned behind a hideous sweater on the farthest clothes rail will be brought into daylight, and be revealed for the star it is.
Sometimes my clothes rail hunting abilities get slightly skewed and my arrival at home is greeted with hoots of laughter, rather than admiration, as I pull out a lime green sweater embroidered with Obamah’s face or some other such nonsense. I cover my mistakes with a shrug, and point out that it will be a collector’s item, in the years to come.
The joys of rifling through clothes rails, along including the intoxicating smell of new garments and the chance of finding a forgotten designer blouse are not exactly my addiction, but more of a craft I practice with enthusiasm. That is why I always check the clothing rails in any store.
