Are staffordshire bull terriors dangerous dogs?
Last night me my partner and kids were on our way to a restaurant and some young lad set upon my partner with a parasol, he was drunk and wanting to fight. He had one of those dogs off of a lead that chased my daughter through a mall corridor and into a restaurant, she ran around a table screaming until a man managed to grab the dog by its collar so she could go free. Now I keep thinking that what if this dog caught up with her, would it have caused her harm. I dont know a lot about dogs but is this the breed that can seriously hurt a child
It doesn't sound as if the dog would have harmed her. The dog was chasing her because she was running away. Children should be taught never to run away from a dog. It triggers a chase instinct which can lead to the most placid dog really frightening a child. If the dog had really intended to attack your daughter there is no way she could have got away from it and no way that man could have grabbed its collar without having his hand bitten off!! Although frightening, I can assure you that the dog would have ignored her completely had she not been running around screaming.
Collectively, Staffs are actually very friendly reliable dogs - just as Rottweilers are.
However, because these dogs are powerful and muscular, they appeal to people who need an ego boost like this aggressive guy. They do not keep their dogs under proper control because they enjoy intimidating people. As a result, you have a badly behaved dog that gets into scraps and certain breeds get a bad name. For example, you don't see these guys wandering around with Golden Retrievers but if they did you'd have these gentle dogs harrassing every one for food and takeaways because they are such gluttons. As a result everyone would be scared of Golden Retrievers.
Can I suggest, for your daughters sake that you try and introduce her to some friendly and quiet dogs. It is not fair for children to grow up with a fear of animals and I guess that the experience would really have shaken her. Dogs are one of the few animals we can keep in our modern societies - we are all so detached from the natural world it is a very important connection. It would be very sad if she spent the rest of her life fearing dogs and other animals just because of this drunken lout.
