Flowers have been linked with romance for centuries. From “roses are red, violets are blue†rhymes to Valentine’s Day and the related increase in flower prices to a bride’s bouquet; flowers are romantic. Since flowers are an integral part of a wedding, it is a practical as well as romantic choice to make flowers the theme of your special occasion. Here are some ideas for a beautiful floral wedding.
The first big choice for a flower-themed wedding is: which flower should you focus on? Do you want to emphasize flowers in general or a specific variety? Roses? Daisies? Orchids? The choices can be overwhelming. Some flowers will be far more expensive than others, so picking a single flower and then supporting it with less expensive “fill†is the simplest option. Roses are traditionally associated with weddings and come in any color you can think of, so they are an obviously classy choice. Or perhaps you like the casual and carefree daisy with its bright colors and happy association. As Meg Ryan states in You’ve Got Mail, “Don’t you think daisies are the friendliest flower?â€Â Other popular choices include tulips, daffodils, orchids, lilies, peonies, lily of the valley, magnolias, or hydrangeas.
Once you have your flower or combination of flowers chosen, you can use the colors to plan your bridal party outfits and decorations. For example, a daisy themed wedding can use white and yellow or a variety of colors to match a variety of rainbow daisies. Appliqués are available of many flowers and can be added for a subtle floral effect on the bride’s gown. Beading floral designs is another subtle yet lovely choice. Or perhaps a simple crown of daisies would emphasize the childlike wonder of romance in your wedding. Silk flowers can be added to almost any headpiece and make a wonderful keepsake for the bride.
Tulle is a standard for wedding decorating, but for a floral wedding, plants are the star. Climbing vines interwoven with tulle create a romantic scene worthy of Romeo and Juliet. Flower petals sprinkled on the table and glass bowls filled with water and your choice of floating flower tops add to the dreamy atmosphere. Candles can enhance the beauty, either floating or simple tea lights scattered on the tables. Floral stamps make simple, elegant, and inexpensive place cards. Another idea is to create your own indoor garden with various sized pots of flowering plants and bushes placed strategically about your venue.
