Blocks have truly been popular for hundreds of years. If you are a traditionalist, you could consider buying the traditional wooden building blocks. However, if your kids are helping you pick them out, they may not be happy with this choice. Instead, you should get imaginative and at least buy the sets of blocks that come in several different shades. Of course, varying shapes and sizes are also on the market.

Aside from varying hues, many blocks also feature pictures of animals on them. Letters and numbers are not unusual traits of many newer blocks, as well, allowing fun time to also be educational. Other traits of some blocks are varying decorations that make any resulting structures more unique, such as the facade of bricks or doors and windows on a few of the blocks.

The facade of the block is not the only trait that changes depending on the block set you get. If you are tired of basic wooden blocks, consider the softer foam kind. These are good for toddlers who might like to throw them. If they are too soft, you can also get plastic or cardboard, which still tends to do less damage when thrown than wooden blocks do. These softer types come in nearly as many shapes, sizes, and colors as the wooden kind do.

If your child is still somewhat young and you don't want to worry about the prospect of him or her choking on the smaller blocks, you can buy the larger type. Many childrens' toys that are bigger than the typical styles are great for curious babies and toddlers that should be able to use many toys without being in danger. Big blocks come in the traditional wooden type, as well as hollow wood, plastic, foam, and cardboard.

While different hues and pictures on blocks can be interesting, your kid may find myriad shapes even better. Some blocks come in the shape of animals, which can be perfect to add to the buildings created with traditional square blocks. Also, triangles, circles, and octagons can all provide more creativity to buildings, allowing kids to truly explore their prowess when it comes to creating structures.

It is possible to turn a simple children's toy into hours of creative amusement. If you know the kind of blocks your children would most enjoy, giving them a batch as a gift could make any birthday or holiday extra special for them. Allowing them to choose the blocks they want can also be a fun process.
