Salt and Pepper Mills â They Say More About You Than You Think!
It is amazing to think that how you use the humble salt and pepper mill and what type of Salt and Pepper Mills you have can say a lot about you as a person. As we know, salt and pepper mills play a very important part in how your food tastes, and they give the individual the ability to make the slight adjustment they need so the food tastes to their satisfaction. It also allows the chef a bit of breathing space as some consumers like their meals less salty and peppery than others. And that’s all it really should be.
However, there is etiquette when it comes to eating and using salt and pepper mills. You should never put salt or pepper on your meal before you have tasted it as this is seen to be rude as this presumes that the food needs improving. In fact, doing so may mean that you end up with a meal too salty or peppery and completely ruin the enjoyment of it, especially when your hosts have an incredulous look on their face because you have seasoned your food before you have tasted it! So, use the salt and pepper grinder too soon and you can be seen as rude or ignorant and upset the balance of a dinner party.
Of course, the consumer can always get their own back. Having tasted the food, they can use the mill to indicate that the meal in front of them is absolutely tasteless and needs plenty of seasoning just to make it edible. Plus, salt and pepper mills lend themselves to theatre (just look at how waiters in Italian restaurants brandish them), so this can be done with great flourish and exaggeration to really hammer home the point. Only, do it with too much of a flourish and there maybe some who would regard this action of a show off.
How about what type of salt and pepper mills you have. Wooden grinders will place you in the traditional mould, to go with cast iron cookware. The more fun and funky, such Chefn’s SaltBall and PepperBall or Cole and Mason Inverta Mills place you in the more quirky realm and then there are the modern electronic grinders, making you seem as someone who is at the cutting edge.
So, there you have it. The humble Pepper Mill or salt mill may get you in a bit of trouble if not used correctly and the type of mill you have may say more about you than you think. And, as salt and pepper mills are a standard in most households, make sure that when you are looking to buy a new set, buy wisely.
